Black babies in Ohio stand a much greater chance of being born too soon, a major factor contributing to rates of African-American infant death higher than anywhere else in the nation. About 14 percent of black babies born in this state are premature. White babies fare much better: 9.6 percent are born before full term. Disparities in prematurity were highlighted in an analysis released today by the March of Dimes, which each year assigns a prematurity letter grade to each of the states.
